The CACLS command lets you modify file permissions on NTFS-formatted hard disks to correctly install the Adobe Updater utility. On FAT32-formatted disks, you must change the security or sharing permissions on the Shared Documents folder to correctly install the Adobe Updater utility. Deleting the updater doesn't work, as everytime I launch Reader, it reinstalls it:-( I have another MacPro at work which it doesn't happen on - I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that that machine has a new version of CS (CS3), whereas the machine with the problem has a very old version (before they even called it CS).

When using the Adobe Update Manager to check for updates for currently installed Adobe applications, either by going through Help > Check for Updates from within an Adobe application, or by using the Adobe Updater application in the Utilities folder, the Adobe Updater application does not report available updates.

The Admin group should have write permission on “Adobe” folder under “/Library/Application Support”. To correct this, set the 775 (recursive) permissions for the “Adobe” folder under “/Library/Application Support”. To do this, do the following:

My Mac Updater App

  1. Type the following command line: sudo chmod -R 775 “/Library/Application Support/Adobe” (note that for using the sudo command, you will be prompted for an admin password).

Incorrect permissions are set for /Library/Application Support/Adobe during installation on some machines. Adobe Update Manager (AUM) requires this value to be 775. This incorrect permission has been observed on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but AUM on any prior Mac OS versions can also run into this issue if for some reason admin group doesn’t have write permission on “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”. Apple Disk Utility's 'Repair Disk Permissions' function does not correct this problem, which is why the above command line correction is required under these circumstances.

On launch, AUM first checks for the presence of Updater6 folder under “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”. If Updater6 is not already present, AUM attempts to create this folder under “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”. If permissions are not correctly set, AUM will not be able to create Updater6 and will fail to check and show any updates.

This behavior is same for both versions of Adobe Update Manager (AUM 5 and AUM 6), which are used by Creative Suite CS3, Creative Suite CS4, Adobe Acrobat/Adobe Reader 8 and Adobe Acrobat/Reader 9 products.
